‘Missing Letters’ Drop in monoprinting during BABE 2013

Celebrating the launch of my new artist’s book ‘Letters of Triangles’ I invited visitors to BABE to create a simple one or two word contribution using the name of a person, place, object or feeling that they missed. Inspired by the ‘triangular letters’ Russian soldiers wrote home during WWII these secret longings formed a collection of anonymous nostalgia notes by close of the book fair. I had 40 contributions and met some very special people. Thank you to everyone for their time and contemplation. x

We had a lovely time in Bristol at BABE 2013 last weekend and will be back in 2015.

We met some wonderful people, saw lots of inspiring books and zines and paper art, were looked after amazingly well by the staff at UWE & Arnolfini and fed some delicious cakes by Pearly King.

We also sold some work and some of our publications will soon be available to peruse in the artists’ book special collections at the Tate Library, Winchester School of Art and the Center for Fine Print, UWE. We are proud.

They say ‘Come and get a taste of what’s happening in the minds of some of the city’s leftfield innovators, as we bring Manchester’s visual arts community and thriving digital design sector together in a playful and informal setting.Eight artists and designers will make lightning-quick presentations about a current project, experiment or source of inspiration – the ideal way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

First up is Artist and book binder Lucy May Schofield, curator of The Bibliotherapy Artist’s Book Library (BABL), a touring mobile library home to over 150 artists’ books. If you want to check her work out, it’s on at Paper Gallery now.’

Lucy May Schofield’s practice in concerned with attempting to capture moments. Focussing on the overlooked, she is consistently drawn to documenting vulnerability. Her desire to memorialise the unspoken and make a record of mortality or place often manifest in the paintings, prints, books and installations she creates. In her new series ‘Souvenirs of Vulnerability’, presented in PAPER #4, Lucy pinpoints moments in relationships that expose the shift in balance of affection. She symbolises these moments through the portraiture of selected objects, objects that suggest and remind her of human fallibility, relationship failings, absolute clarity, each expressed honestly on paper with paint and ink.

Experience a 2 day workshop of 4 micro projects delivered on the mornings and afternoons of each day. You will be exploring and experimenting with the use of text and image to inspire new visual narratives. Using found text to create poems, your own images as muse for text rich works, 2 word stories to create a series of pictures, limitations of media to test and inspire new image making possibilities, and the poetics of found objects to create new ways of storytelling that will inform the way you go on to make your own publications. Using typewriters, lettraset and collage, you will come away from HBP with the confidence and enthusiasm to translate and develop your ideas into creative book works.

A new edition. Roadkill II (victims of the modern world). LMS

I have been quietly painting forlorn creatures for the past few months. There are three that made it into books, a frog, a squirrel, a pigeon. Each are inkjet prints on Somerset Satin paper, bound in grey board with silver foil blocking. They will soon be living outside of my studio and residing in Paper Gallery. The Center for Fine Print Research in Bristol have given each one a home too, thank you Sarah B.

This Sunday indulge in a day of creative book discussion and making at Hot Bed Press supported by one-to-one book tutorials and group surgeries. Over the day we will talk through ideas and discuss your own publications and artist’s books that may have outstanding issues that need honing or resolving. We will use the day as a testing ground for experimentation and feedback. As a group we will share ideas and experience to help one another move forward with our books.
